What I’m Doing Wednesday #3

Welcome to yet another installment of What I’m Doing Wednesday!

What I’m Wearing

Linking up with The Pleated Poppy and Life as Mrs. Burnett for What I Wore Wednesday!

striped shirt

I honestly have no idea where I got half my clothes from (how do people remember every single item?!) but I somehow remember everything about this outfit except for the jeans.

What I’m Reading

I’m STILL working on reading the entire Gossip Girl series. I’m currently on book #10 – “Would I Lie To You.”  I LOVED the TV series so much, it’s just killing me to keep reading this when it’s almost nothing like the show. I guess I should’ve realized this beforehand. BUT I’m going to keep reading it because that’s just how I am.

What Makes Me Go “Awwww”

Okay, so this is a completely random category but seriously, look at this picture of my babies! SO CUTE!!

Snoozing in the same crate!

What I Made For Supper

Tonight I tried a new recipe – Chicken, Chorizo and Tortilla Soup by Rachael Ray. It was definitely a winner! Although, I made a few changes —  (1.) I used shredded chicken instead of bite sized pieces. (2.) I didn’t add the hot sauce because I wasn’t sure how hot the chorizo would be. I think it was the perfect heat level without it, but everyone’s different! (3.) I accidentally bought chicken broth, instead of chicken stock, so it needed a little extra flavoring. I just added half a packet of taco seasoning. (4.) Next time I won’t use the potatoes, I don’t feel like they were really necessary. Seriously, try this recipe!! So good!

It looks pretty too!

What I’m Baking

My mom bought me a mini donut maker for my birthday on Monday (yeah, she’s awesome like that) and I used it for the first time today! I didn’t feel like going to the store to buy anything fancy so I just made the basic donut batter and used granulated sugar and powdered sugar as the toppings. I’d say I did pretty good for my first try!

What I’m Laughing At

I’m laughing at myself today! Have you ever seen pictures of perfectly vacuumed carpets with perfect, symmetrical vacuum lines?

Well, I vacuumed and shampooed my bedroom carpet earlier in the week. No, a blind and drunk person did not do that. I don’t even know how it got that way! I don’t remember walking in any circles, but apparently I did.

Doggy footprints everywhere!

What It’s Like To Be A Nurse

I took a little break from blogging over the weekend. I feel like I need to get this thing under control. Most people have a theme to their blog – fashion, food, parenting, etc. Me? I just babble. And I’m kind of okay with that, but I never really put much thought into my posts. I just start typing and see what happens (as I’m going to do today). But anyway, bear with me and we’ll try to figure something out, okay?

For today’s post, I’m going to talk about what a typical night at work is like for me. Some things may or may not be exaggerated.

((Background information – I’ve been a nurse for 3 1/2 years. I work 7p-7am on a renal medical/surgical telemetry floor. Meaning most of my patients have kidney disease, are on dialysis, need to have a heart monitor, may have had surgery recently, or have some random ailment that doesn’t qualify them to be placed on any other floor. We basically have the melting pot of patient diagnoses.))

6:50 – 7:00 pm

Arrive to work and get my assignment – varies from 4-6 patients. While attempting to look up info on my patients (diagnosis, medical history, labs, meds, etc), another nurse arrives and complains about her assignment and wants it changed. So then we all shuffle patients around and the assignments get changed, and now I have to look up info on new patients.

7:oo – 7:45 pm

Time to start report, but can’t find the nurse who had my patients. I usually have to get report from 2 different nurses. One of them forgets why the person is here. Another forgot to give them their suppertime meds, “you don’t mind giving the pills, do you? I switched them to your time.” And also, “Oh he’s really, really confused, so I couldn’t do his admission history. His daughter was here all day though, so he didn’t try to get out of bed.” (Really? Why didn’t you do the admission history then? Or call the admission nurse?)

7:45 – 9:00 pm

After introducing myself to all my patients (and hearing, “Oh honey, you don’t look a day over 16! Are you sure you’re a nurse?” at least once), I begin my assessments. Usually at some point during this time, I get called on my (annoying) work phone no less than 5 times to either fix telemetry leads, talk to a lab tech, radiology tech, pharmacist, family member, etc, give pain meds, help someone to the bathroom, etc, etc. And also during these assessments, I hear things such as, “Yeah, I’m coughing a lot, look at this green stuff I saved in this tissue.”,” Oh, my poop looks funny, I saved it in the toilet for you to look at.”, “Can you scratch my butt for me? I can’t reach.”, “I picked at this scab on my arm and it’s bleeding.”, “Do you know if I’m taking a pill that starts with a M or D and I don’t remember what it’s for?”.. and so on.

9:00 – 10:30 pm

Time to give out medications! None of which are available from pharmacy, even though they’re routine medications that the patient has been on for DAYS. Wait at least 30 minutes for each pill I request. Out of the 4-6 patients I have to give meds to – one will deny ever hearing of any of their pills, one will refuse “that little white pill because I definitely don’t take little white pills at home”, one will ask for a sleeping pill that they don’t have ordered, one will ask for a laxative… Oh, and also, the person admitted with uncontrolled hypertension – will have a blood pressure of 220/112 without PRN’s available. Time to call the doctor!

10:30 pm – 1:00 am

Attempt to chart my assessments. Receive an admission and get report from the ED nurse who knows absolutely nothing the patient. Tells me their IV is in their right wrist when it’s in their left forearm. Tells me they’re alert and oriented, comes up to the floor speaking to “that cat sitting on top of that IV pole.” Tells me, “Oh yeah, their vitals have been fine,” comes up to the floor with HR in the 130’s and temp 102. Time to call the doctor.

1:00 – 1:30 am

Lunch time! Watch tv in the break room, guzzle my 32 oz of super sweet iced tea, eat whatever random food I have that night. Oh, and also receive about 5 calls from the secretary and/or monitor tech about telemetry, pain meds, potty breaks, etc. Have they forgotten I’m on my lunch break?! Oh, and did I mention we have these handy, dandy locators that tell everyone where we are at all times? They can always find you.

2:00 – 5:00 am

Finish charting. Answer call bells. Read over the charts. Look at labs. Give pain meds, breathing treatments, or other random PRN’s. Patient #4 wakes up at 3am requesting a nicotine patch, call the doctor again. Patient #3 with HR sustaining in the 40’s, call the doctor again. Wait 45 minutes for doctor to return page. Patient #1 requests a sleeping pill at 4:50am, don’t think so! Wait, what? Patient #2 has a history of VRE?! Oh man, they haven’t been on isolation this whole time! Time to get out the bleach wipes and scrub my body. Patient #6 decides to pee in the garbage can because they couldn’t find the urinal sitting on their bedside table.

5:00 – 7:00 am

Send one or two patients to dialysis. Give out early morning meds. Patient #4 pulls out IV while attempting to put on a hoodie over their hospital gown. Blood everywhere. Too bad that doctor only ordered a one time dose of Hydralazine (instead of a PRN), because the hypertensive patient is now 234/128, time to call the doctor! Receive phone call from lab, patient #2 with potassium level 2.3. Guess I’ll page that doctor again. Doctor never calls back because it’s almost shift change. Oh, and apparently patient #3 has thrown up everywhere because that little white pill that she never takes? Yeah, it was her Reglan. ((Please oh please, let day shift get here soon!))

7:00 – 7:30 am

Thank goodness, day shift is here and ready to get report. Except they need to drink their coffee and eat their oatmeal first. “I don’t know why night shift is in such a hurry, they don’t do anything during the night anyway. All the patients do is sleep.”  “What do you mean you didn’t restart that IV? Now I have to do it.”

7:35 am

FINALLY take a bathroom break. Phewww, I’ve been holding that pee in for 12 hours!!

THE END

And there you have it. Okay, so maybe that all didn’t happen in one night. But yes, every single one of those things has happened to me at some point. Most likely within the last week.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore my job. I love my patients (and the majority of them are seriously awesome). I love my night shift coworkers more than anything. I truly enjoy what I do. And I like to think I’m pretty darn good at it. But what bothers me are the people who think – “well, I guess I’ll major in nursing because I don’t know what else to do.” NURSING IS NOT EASY. You need to be passionate about caring for people and passionate about what you do, because nursing is certainly not for everyone. NIGHT SHIFT IS NOT EASY. Contrary to popular belief, patients do not sleep during the night. They’re bored and lonely and the hospital beds are not comfortable, so they ring their call bell all the time. They ask for random things.. because they’re BORED.

Maybe someday I’ll make a What It’s Like To Be A Nurse Part 2 with all the super awesome stuff!

Any other night shift nurses agree with this summary? Feel free to voice your opinions 🙂

Oh, What A New Year

Oh gracious. I promise I’m not neglecting you my faithful readers (there has to be some of you.. right?!). I wish I had more time to update, but I’ve been way too busy being sick (I think I’m finally better now), working, and cleaning like a crazy person because I was preparing for my mom’s arrival. She arrived on Thursday and is staying until the 10th so I can’t guarantee a ton of updates this week.. sorry!

sign

She really, really wanted a sign.

We had a billion days of rain last week so on Saturday when I took the dogs out after working all night.. my precious little Roxie decided to lay on her belly and pull herself through piles of mud. Yep, through the mud. She was quite pleased with herself.. until she realized that it meant I would be giving her a bubbly bath. At 8am. After I worked 12 hours. UGH! But look how cute she is 🙂

Muddy feet.

I’m working on organizing my life and my first project was using my awesome new makeup organizer that I talked about here and that you can purchase here. I seriously love it! It’s meant to be placed on top of the counter, but I have a serious issue with things cluttering my counters.. so I made room for it under my cabinet and it’s beautiful! I seriously love using it and now I need to go out and buy more makeup because the whole back half of it is literally empty.

Perfection!

Today is Playoff Sunday.. let’s go Redskins! My mom and I made a feast with tons of yummy foods and most importantly, we made Cranberry Pomegranate Sangria! You can find the awesome recipe here which I found on Pinterest, of course. It’s seriously amazing. Unfortunately, the Redskins appear to be losing and will most likely have lost by the time I end up publishing this. My dear hubby is not very happy.

Pot ‘o Sangria.

So I guess I’m going to finish this update with my New Year’s Resolutions.

1. To become a better, more successful blogger. I want to become more involved in the awesome WordPress blogging community and participate in daily activities. Or maybe even make my own daily activities/topics to blog about! I have a seriously hard time updating when I have to work, so I can’t promise daily updates, but I hope to update at least 3 times a week. One of my favorite things is “It’s OK Thursday” by an old coworker of mine. You can read her blog here.

2. To become more involved at work. I’ve already begun working on this goal, go me!! I’ve been working as a floor nurse for 3 1/2 years now and I feel like it’s time to start working on my career. I’ve agreed to be a preceptor to a senior nursing student for an entire semester (which should be starting in the next few weeks). I’ve agreed to take a charge nurse class. I signed up for an ACLS class. I’ve signed up to be on a committee to help educate other nurses on new nursing skills. I feel like I’m heading in the right direction, especially because education is something else I’m very passionate about.

3. To become more organized in my life. Pinterest exists for a reason!! I’ve pinned a billion different ways to clean and organize my life.. now it’s time I get started! I’ve already begun working on this goal. Go me! My next task is figuring out how to make my closet a little less chaotic.. at least until we can have someone come in and customize/rebuild my walk-in closet for me. I also hope to FINALLY paint some more rooms in this big ol’ house. I’ve only succeeded in painting the living room, the downstairs half bath, and the upstairs guest bathroom.. and we’ve lived here since May!

I have way too many beauty products.

I think I’ll just leave it at that for now. Wish me luck!

And now something to make you giggle.. that I found on Pinterest.. of course.

Merry (Belated) Christmas!

Ugh. So I broke my promise to you guys. I’m sorry! What kind of blogger am I that I go away for a week and a half AND THEN I don’t update for several days after I get home! Well, I seemed to have come down with yet another sinus/respiratory cold.. so I’ve been laying around and doing nothing but reading my Kindle. Which means that my house is currently in a state of disaster and my mom will be here in exactly ONE WEEK so I better get my life together!

Anyway, how was everyone’s Christmas?! Did Santa give you everything you wanted??

My first wish that came true was spending a week and a half in PA with our families and finally getting to enjoy time with them. We haven’t spent any substantial amount of time in PA since our wedding last October, so it was super awesome to see everyone. One of the best parts.. my mom’s homemade cookies! NOMS!

Also, my mom and I attempted to make deviled eggs. “Watch out for the paprika, it comes out fast.”

546587_645269532997_646431347_n

I convinced the hubby to let us give the dogs their gifts on Christmas Eve.. they got tons of stuffed toys (to eventually destroy and scatter cotton all over the house) and lots of yummy dog treats. Roxie – our Boston Terrier – loves tennis balls, so we stocked up on those. And Layla – our Boxer, who’s a rescue – finally got her own doggie bed! She’s been sleeping in it every night! I took some videos of them playing with their toys but I haven’t quite figured out how to insert them yet.. I’ll keep working on it!

And then as for me.. well I got (almost) everything on my list! Santa was SUPER AWESOME to me this year.

1. A carpet steam cleaner and shampooer. Yes, I seriously ask for this and yes, I’m seriously super excited to use it this weekend!

12618_646006206697_436367450_n

2. A super awesome printer that also prints pictures. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet, but supposedly I can print WIRELESSLY from my phone! I take way too many pictures on my phone and this printer is supposed to be one of the best!

photo2

3. An awesome countertop makeup organizer and makeup brush set! Can’t wait to show pictures of the final, organized product! You can buy the makeup organizer here and the makeup brush set here.

4. Another thing I got (which hasn’t been delivered yet) is the complete Gossip Girl book series. The series finale just aired on TV and now I’m super stoked to read the whole series and see how it compares! Hopefully it’s equally awesome!

reg_1024.GossipGirl.mh.120412

From the series finale.

There’s still one thing else that I wished for.. it just hasn’t happened yet. Keep your fingers crossed for me, please.

Yawn.

Today I am just plain exhausted. Seriously. I’m procrastinating with making supper even though I better hurry it up because hubby will be home soon and I work tonight! So yes, no post today. Except this. Something that I’m seriously in love with right now.. DOG SHAMING. It’s where people post pictures of their dogs with signs of stuff they should be ashamed about. For some reason it makes me laugh hysterically.  So I’m sharing this joy with you all 🙂

And here are some dog shaming websites for your viewing pleasure! Here and here!

And yes, I did originally discover this on Pinterest. Obviously.
